Open Design Afrika Festival

Beehive forms and system

The beehive consists of many different parts working together to form a cohesive whole. The bees build hexagonal (6 sided) cells from wax creating honey comb. The hexagon is one of the strongest shapes for building. It is an ecosystem in which every component contributes to the health of the hive. The same approach will be used in an inclusive design strategy of the festival.

The hexagonal shape from the beehive and logo inspired the spatial layout and conceptualization for the outdoor festival.

Collab group project

RATIONAL

The new venue for the UBUNTU Festival is outdoors and inspired by the beehive forms, ecosystems, and purpose. The project was completed as a group effort for the collaboration held by Vega School, Cape Town. The festival will be held in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, Cape Town. The layout of the festival is inspired by the hexagon form, connected to the logo of Open Design Afrika. The space utilizes Open Design Afrika’s brand colours and consists of a few different sectors including collaboration workshops, a food court, a drinks bar, a public talk space, and private communication booths all surrounding the central hexagonal stage. The stage is for the silent disco events taking place as entertainment for the festival. The beehive concept inspires the purpose of the festival to bring diverse people, parts, and creativity together to form a cohesive whole. The materials chosen are lightweight and sustainable and allow for easy setup and take down of structures.
